In the early days of cruise ships, only the very wealthy and influential could afford to travel. This put an imprint on everything, including the clothes each passenger had to wear on board.
Today’s dress code has changed considerably. Tuxedos and fancy evening gowns are no longer a prerequisite for boarding, but to feel most comfortable, you should take into account a few basic rules regarding the wearing of clothing.
The closet on a cruise is divided into several types:
- Daytime
- Evening
- Closet for the city
- Closet for formal evenings
What to wear during the day?
Daytime is a time when you can be free from strict rules and formalities: shorts, breeches, jeans, t-shirts, shirts, skirts. The main thing is that the appearance should not be vulgar. Swimsuits, pareos, summer miniskirts and short shorts with tops should be left for the pool area. In order not to make a bad impression, it is advisable to throw a shirt or t-shirt on the torso, if they are a little beyond 10 meters from the pool area.
What to wear in the evening?
Usually on a cruise ship you will not be required to wear fancy attire in the evening, but cases where a dress code is established for evening visits to restaurants are possible. To comply, be sure to bring classic style clothing and keep an eye on the paper that is issued daily on the cruise. An elegant dress and a classic suit are usually enough.
What to wear to town?
If a sea voyage involves a stopover and a visit to the city, it’s worth considering taking practical and discreet clothing. Casual is the most common, comfortable and unpretentious style of clothing. You do not want to take too much, then focus on your daily closet. For the city, more often than not, it is enough.
Closet for formal evenings
Cruises of 7 days or more usually involve at least one formal evening. Whether it’s a captain’s reception or a gala dinner, you’ll be required to look not only elegant, but also more dressy. If you want to match, be sure to bring an evening gown and a three-piece suit. You don’t want to burden yourself, a classic suit will be enough for a man and a beautiful dress with additional accessories for a woman.
